Summary:
An empirical research into the development of the neoclassical theory of international
trade 1933-1968, meant to test the validity of ideas on theory development prevalent in
philosophy of science (Carnap, Popper, Lakatos, Kuhn, Sneed) and in economic methodology
(Friedman, hid interpreters and his opponents). Most of these ideas turn out to have - at
best - only a vague and devious relationship to the actual, real logic of the problem
situation in this research programme as perceived by its leading and most successful
economists. The inherent logic in the development of the programme is neatly described in
informal symbolism. This logic (a "scheme of working") is claimed to hold for
theoretical neoclassical research programmes in general. Chapters include "The
emergence of interesting theorems", "Economic 'Normal Science' Centred Around
Interesting Theorems", "Metatheory on Theory Structure and Theory Development in
the Ohlin Samuelson Research Programme", "The Hypothesis of the Plausibility
Strategy", "Problems of Econometrics", "Vice, Virtue and
Rationality". A larger summary of the essentials is:
