Doi Arrives

Today Doi, a young carpenter from my contractor Daniel's boat yard, safely arrived in Jinja with Akamba, the bus line that kicked out another of my crew in Kenya, half way to Mwanza, Tanzania. Doi lived with Daniel and got in big trouble after he had resisted Daniels extensive looting of my dhow in the two weeks it was waiting for customs clearing. He will have to learn English, which will be very good for my Kiswahili. We are going to train him as a professional sailor. To my relief, he turned out to swim, which is not obvious here, and his fishing abilities are, there is no better expression, serious.

Photo: Doi after his night # 1 on the dhow, catching our first sangara (this is a baby, a nile perch can grow up to 2 m, 200 kg), accidentally, with a worm, not a usual target for this fish eater

Photo: We have no chance to finish the fish we are catching now Doi arrived. He promised we can go to his mother in Ukerewe when the load of soap we bought for her in exchange for fish reaches the dhow's cargo capacity

Photo: On one place our solar panel driven deck sprinkling tube now has a concentration of holes, our shower.

Photo: we hope this will impress East African lake police (see: Kidnapped) almost as much as a rocket launcher
