Heidegger acquired his position as rector of the University of Freiburg after his predecessor preferred stepping down to giving way to further Nazi influence at the University of Freiburg. Famous is his inaugurational speech ("The German University's Self-Affirmation"). It was an affirmation of Nazism, in which he divided student tasks into work service, military service, and scientific service. Also on other occasions, Heidegger gave solidly pro-Hitler speeches.
