What is DME

DME, deductive model exploration, is the mathematical analysis of the properties of a scientific model.
Every mathematical model in every science has desired and undesired properties. Model properties may be desired because they are thought to

• correctly model reality
• yield interesting predictions yet to be tested

. Undesired properties consist of

• predictions thought to be false
• simplications thought to be disturbing
• assumptions mathematically of computationally forced upon the modeller by the need to generate some desired properties but thought unclear, untestable or false.

DME is essentially research into the mathematical possiblities of removing of undesired features and the they incorporation of desired feature.
DME is the applied mathematics of an empirical science.
By stressing the distinction between empirical and formal sciences, traditional philosophy of science has a blind spot for the mathematical DME strategies in the empirical sciences.

Empirical scientists working at a mathematical or computational model spend the larger part of their time pondering how to get rid of its undesired features while retaining or even gaining desired features. This is not as easy as changing the content of a shopping basket because formal structures are rigid, so every change somewhere in the system will usually have consequences elsewhere that have to be deduced and evaluated. That is the art of DME.
