Assignments version date 991101

Earlier versions of this page stated:

"I have rewards for assignments only in the first year. Now we are adults. That makes rewards unnecessarily bureaucratic. We just do them. All of them. Always. That is a matter of ethics. Good for you. Good for everybody. Be a morally strong person. You will end up not even needing exams!"

But, according to students, due to time pressure caused by rated assignments for other courses, even adults prove unable to steer on pure ethics, morals and responsibility. Hence, some assignments are now rated. The rules should be followed meticulously. Click here for the rules.

Assignment for week 2:

Everybody mails me, answering the following questions:

1. In which country were you raised?
2. Do have near family in other countries?
3. Do you know other countries through work you have done?
4. What are the main differences between the countries you know?

One screen of text (say 200 words) is the rough target. It could be less, do not type more than 2 (400 words).

Mail to hamminga@kub.nl
Subject: phec2

NB!: If you have the subject wrong, your mail will get lost.

Assignment for week 4

Study carefully and in detail the Lecture Notes Philosophy of Economy that are on the net thus far. These are really condensed summaries, so even if there is one sentence you do not understand, you should ask other students what it means. If nobody knows, bring it in class!

Assignment for week 5

Below all web pages now linked to Lecture Notes Philosophy of Economy , I have now put control questions, open questions and exercises. To reach our learning aims of the next weeks, you should now definitely control what we have studied thus far.  Do your self test in a small group, using the control questions and exercises. Any problems and unclarities left? Mail to me hamminga@kub.nl. putting phec5  in your subject box.

Report session 5, Sep 29, 1999

In time: 44 students.
Late: 10 students
Absent: 21 students.

Students asked about web page changes and were referred to Exam

Students complained about the cost of reprinting improved web pages. We calculated that 1000 sheets should be printed to equal the cost of one book of NLG150,-, the opportunity cost of which we avoid by this web procedure and we were not likely to print more than 200 pages. So we started to feel very good about it! It was suggested I add version numbers, though, to check whether or not you have the latest version. I will: I will insert version dates.

Only two students declared to actually have done the assignment for week 5. This was generally believed to be caused by assignments for international finance and international management, where resp. 25% and 50% of the total end score can be obtained from the assignment. I, as a teacher of this key course philosophy of economy, thought it should be clear that doing the assignments would be held as of crucial importance for every individual students if he is to succeed for this course in the end. This thought now turns out to be false. Without credit points, the roughly 5 preparation hours per week destined for this course will not be spent to this course but to other courses that issue credit points. So, to avoid that, we now introduce credit points for this course too!

Report session 6, Oct 6, 1999

I was very satisfied with the average quality of the assignments mailed. Those who got a delivery failure can resubmit until Friday Oct 8, 18:00. The results give me confidence that most students now have the proper background to proceed. I got a lot of comments and questions from students that allow me to improve my explanations on the web pages.

Assignments for week 7

- In case of earlier delivery failure mail your answers to assignment phec5 to me hamminga@kub.nl. putting phec5  in your subject box. Deadline: Friday Oct 8, 1999, 18:00hrs

Report session 7, Oct 13, 1999

We had a good discussion around question 1 to 5 of the Cultural diversity table.
In sending rated assignment phec5, there turned out to be delivery failures "mailbox full" messages even after the my mailbox hamminga@kub.nl had been cleared on Oct 6. My operator ICO is working at a possible enlargement. Meanwhile the box is cleared again and now should work. Those whose confirmation of receipt was not on the lists I brought to the lecture hall are asked to mail again Thursday Oct 14. At lecture 7 Oct 27, I will bring a list of persons whose assignment I received, for students to check. That  list shall be on the net on Oct 27 before 18:00hrs.

Assignment for week 7, Oct 27, 1999
