Empirical Content: Subject definition

Empirical Content: Subject definition List

Theories usually say much more than can be checked directly by experiment and observation. "All the theory implies" is called the logical content of the theory. The part of this that can, in principle, be checked by experiment and observation is called the empirical content of the theory. The terms "principle", "experiment", and "observation" in the previous sentence are, however, seriously underspecified, and give rise to many definitions and views on what is the empirical content of a theory.

This research line suffers from severe conceptual problems and misunderstandings between philosophers of science. The task here is to come up which precise definitions of empirical content, to show clearly with concrete examples how these definitions should be applied, and to compare the concept with other precize definitions.
